Observation before intervention
Start with what is present: paths people already take, damp corners, damaged leaves, animal movement, wind exposure, and places you naturally pause. Write down what you actually see before explaining why it happens.

Soil is a living system
Texture and drainage matter, but soil is more than a planting medium. Roots, organisms, organic matter, air, and water interact. The USDA’s soil-health principles emphasize living roots, soil cover, biodiversity, and minimizing disturbance.

Compare a handful from bare ground with one from beneath established cover. Note smell, structure, roots, moisture, and visible life.

Follow water before placing it
Watch where rain enters, concentrates, slows, disappears, and leaves. Hard surfaces and compacted ground can increase runoff; vegetation and permeable areas can help water soak into the site. Any earthworks require site-specific design and appropriate professional guidance.

During safe rainfall, sketch flow arrows and mark puddles, erosion, roof discharge, and areas that stay unexpectedly dry.

The direction and steepness of a slope affect sun, wind, temperature, and moisture. Buildings, tree lines, and walls reshape those patterns again. Record orientation alongside shade and exposure instead of treating a compass direction as a complete answer.

Look for climates within the climate
Walls can store heat, low areas can collect cold air, wind can dry an exposed bed, and shade can preserve moisture. These small differences can matter as much as a regional label. USDA hardiness zones describe average annual extreme minimum winter temperature—not every condition a plant experiences.

Let the record cross seasons
A single visit freezes a moving system. Leaf-out, flowering, frost, standing water, shade, migration, harvest, and dormancy each reveal different constraints. A simple repeated record is often more useful than one elaborate description.
